You look for the same as with a modern overhead door, except you will not have rollers. Springs, hinges, door condition, etc. Largest problem I have found are the hinges and the spring condition. Be sure that the springs have safety cable restraints.

That plug is an old phone jack(plug).

Add this tidbit of advice to Scott's list is to never set up your ladder in the driveway in front of the overhead garage door to mount the roof if the garage door is the old swing-out type. :o

Me thinks that Jerry is speaking from experience! ;)

Scott exaggerated a bit when he described it as an "old" plug.

We had those plugs when we were upgraded to rotary phone service and our 3 digit phone number was changed to a new seven digit number. Sometime after that someone decided there was a need for 10 digits. "Old" would appear to relate to an aging aspect which I'd prefer to not discuss. :o

That plug has been there longer then that wallboard, judging from the hole. It's old, Eric. :D

Some doors had springs. I had one the other day that has weights on cables. It's a "Tilt-In". It tilts in, not out. House is 1941.
And that door is smooth. There's a keyed latch on the outside. Works great.

BTW, the separation wall is terra cotta block.
