I have a rotten bathroom floor joist which is barely hanging on. I was considering supporting the joist from below, cutting out the bad section, then splicing a new piece in using splice plates. I just am not sure if this is a valid method for repairing floor joists in Florida. If someone knows, I would be glad to hear from you. Thanks

Floor joist are required to span from one bearing point to the other. The joist can be replaced or a joist can be sistered to it, with a minimum of 1-1/2" bearing on both ends.

Splicing new sections in is not standard practice and would only be acceptable if the proposed splicing was accompanied by structural analysis. This type of fix should be designed by a structural engineer.
