I live in Fate (Rockwall) Texas. I have been told two different things by AC companies about what is and is not required by code when installing a new air handler. The house is about 10 years old and one guy is saying he needs to do all this stuff to bring it up to code and that the guy who said I didn't is wrong. The first issue is if a float switch is required or not. The second is do I have to have a filter rack installed on the air handler. The unit is up in the attic and has a secondary drain out on our back patio.

In NC if the backup drain pan has a drain to the outside a float switch is not needed. And the filter can be anywhere in the return where it is accessible....like in a wall filter grill. Not sure about Texas.

If the secondary condensate drain system is installed correctly, no float switch is required. There is no requirement for a filter rack at the system, but there should be filters at each return air opening.
