Hello,

Today in unfinished full basement there was a small rectangular area on the floor comprised of dirt and gravel about 10" x 14". It was near plumbing rough-ins. 14 year old townhome. No pics, I broke camera..

Any idea what this is and since it is open earth should it be sealed to prevent a radium entrance source.

Thanks

Could it be a crude sump pit?

I don't think there is any concern of radium entry. Radon could be a problem though.

Might be a open area for a tub/shower drain. I see this often,an the other plumbing RI is a good indication of this.

I agree with Brian. A home I had several years age had rough plumbing in the basement for a bathroom. I had the same hole in the floor for a tub or shower trap. I also agree it could add to Radon levels.

Some area's have more radon than others. In my area we have some and some people buy into the idea that the lower levels we have will cause cancer but others don not buy into this as much as we are causing "global warming".
