I think that is peel & stick metal-faced bituminous tape. Not that it matters much.

Maybe they had an air leak.

Looks like roof mastic tape. I hope you called out a full roof replacement. Considering how they screwed up the valley, the rest isn't worth keeping either.
On a side note, I went to the Red Green book tour show. Lots of fun.

Duct tape comes in colors, they could have matched up the color better....I'd write it up as amateurish.........

Dom is correct. The tape is a metal faced bituminous material. None-the-less, using that in the attempt to seal those kinds of leaks was bad but what REALLY had me doing a Lurch was the fact that they used ridge cap shingles laid ON TOP OF the field shingles, for the valley, thinking they would shed water just fine!

Remember Lurch the big, ugly, butler on the Adams Family that never spoke? The only sound he'd make was a long drawn groan when the family did something weird.

Lon, I sure hope you aren't an HI. If that's how you would write that up then you don't belong in this business. It's those kinds of comments that give HI's a bad name.

I THINK Lon forgot to put a smiley face after his comment ...

Lurch did talk, he said "You rang?"

I guess they decided they had too much attic ventilation.

Lurch DID have that little speaking part didn't he. I had forgot about that. I still LOVE his groan though and unfortunately have to use it on many home inspections!

Bob in a world without screw up's and mistakes there wouldn't be a need for home inspections. groaning and disbelief at what you get to see is just an added bonus to the business. helping people deal with the problems is the feel good part cause your helping them. getting paid is the best part cause your doing what you have a passion for. :))

Sometimes I like to think of it as each house might have bloopers that are all yours to discover while your there. Can you find them? yes it is serious and sometimes you just have to laugh and say what were they thinking??

Now 1001 ways to use duct tape. I need a good laugh today. Thanks

Correct, that appears to be ridge cap material that is installed in a valley. Sad thing is there is a need to stop water from entering the structure and quite possibly someone got paid good money for that work.

Would you define that installation as a reinforcement for the keel or just a bilge dressing?

Personally, I liked all the shiners in the ridge cap shingles - don't want one to get away !

And every one of those ridge caps that have been face nailed is a potential leak.
