In the picture, the switch on the left controlled the exterior lights on either side of the front door. I hadn't seen a switch like this before and it was really difficult to operate. Anybody know what it's called, or if it does anything special? This is a residential house built in 1971. I recommended having the switch replaced since it was difficult to operate.

Thanks.

it's for an X-10 system, the switch can be operated by a remote control plugged into an outlet in the house.
Here's more information than you ever wanted;

Jon,
Was the switch difficult to operate (defective mechanism) or did you have a problem because you were not familiar with how it operated ?

It was difficult to operate. I kind of had to push the button in and down a little. Are those switches normally easy to operate, or is there a trick?

The top part is a push switch and the bottom is a rocker/dimmer, works to create three way where wiring is not available, and to control with all on or all off command.
