Can you run a oil burner and a wood/coal stove in the same chimney? If so what is the correct way to connect them? I would like to add a wood stove as my primary heat and just run the oil as back up.

Charles, my 2006 IRC says, at M1801.12 Multiple solid fuel prohibited. "A solid-fuel-burning appliance or fireplace shall not connect to a chimney passageway venting another appliance."
So, you "can", but you should not.

call you're insurance company and ask if they will cover the home after it burns down from you're modification.
that makes the answer simple doesn't it?:D

If its done correctly. And your Insurance carrier will need to approve of this set-up in your house.
