Found this today and thought I would share. This is one end of the water heater earthquake strap with a home made tension adjustment.

With considerable shaking or rocking those hooks look like they could come unhooked since they are not crimped closed. Just a thought. Seismic straps are not required in my part of the country.

Straps need to be anchored with 1/4 inch by 3 inch lag bolts with washers into the studs. I've inspected close to 1500 water heaters and have never seen someone try it like this.
