View Full Version : New Joists with Mortise and Tenon Joinery

On top of the many inadequate structural repairs in the basement/crawlspace of this house, the workers made a mortise and tenon joint when a joist hanger would have been so much easier. I can't see there being much strength left in this tenon as it looks to have been cut too small. I still see many houses with the method of construction and I have the same in my own house but there's just better ways to do this now.

Yep, they need to add hangers now (and should have added them even at the start).

It looks like the mortise hole was there, and the urge to poke a new tenon in there was just too strong. :D
