Could you make that a bit narrower?

1950's house, attic hatch is in the hall closet. The doorway measures 17 1/2 " and the shelves are nailed in. :confused:

Vacant house, no props or phone books. Good thing I had my loaner flashlight and had a light breakfast. :D
