Say what you see.

Chimney is rusted and is at the end of its useful life.
Expect to replace chimney in near future.

Is that just metal siding or a pre-fab part?

Yea, Just the rust on the outside. The inside was fine.

Thanks

My own approach would be more specific by writing that the "vent housing" is rusted. I use the word "chimney" when it's a structure such as brick or wood framed. People will understand either way though.

A chase is not a chimney.

A metal "pot", termination, cap or shroud atop a chase, is not a chimney.

Appears to have an unlisted masonry-style chimney termination over the factory built chimney, which would not be approved. Recommend qualified chimney inspector conduct a Level II inspection to identify the chimney manufacturer and model then identify the installed components and advise on suitability for this application.

What is connected to this chimney? Oil heat? Factory built woodburning fireplace? Woodstove? What about the inside and rest of the installation? Did you/ can you pull this termination to inspect the flue for signs of damage, obstruction or modification?

Regardless, there is corrosion that needs to be addressed.

Corrosion of metal will make its surface porous and may allow water to "wick" to other materials creating more damage. Depending on materials used, certain metals will act as an anode with others increasing deterioration. It is nearly incapable of perform the protection it was originally intended for.

These housings are very common around here but they're getting old and deteriorated. They're wonderful for the birds and their nests. That cap in Fidel's photo is a retrofit - either because there was rust through or bird problems.

Hi Marc, Did make a recommendation to have it inspected by chimney company. as far as what is connected to; just to the furnace
and water heater. As far a this unit it's A metal "pot" not a chimney.
Thanks to all that responded.
