Deck Steps to Grass Landing ? See Pics

When these deck steps were put in the entire area after the last step was at grade and level. I've done some excavating recently and a result there is now a small not to stable landing. (see Pics) I would like to box in the area with 6 x 6's for side retention and make a landing. I would prefer just to leave the landing level with grass. Is this allowed? If so how big does it have to be? thanks

The width of the stairway or 36" whichever is greater, and a minimum of 36" deep - i.e. the direction of travel coming off the stairs into the yard.
The elevation of the landing needs to be in continuity with that of the stairs.

Not only is it a trip hazard, the stringers in contact with soil will rot out.

Add to the above that the height of all the risers must be within 3/8" of each other, highest riser to lowest riser, and that bottom riser looks to be about half the height of the next riser up.

Yes, the grass can serve as the "landing", but the riser heights need to meet the requirements.

Once you construct a "landing", that landing now must meet the requirements as stated above by others.

Being as the stairway is required to be 36" wide minimum the landing would be at least 36" wide, and, as Watson said, if the stairs are wider than 36", then the landing needs to be as wide as the stairs.
