Huh? This was from a turn of the (last) century building with gas lights and electric ones added. People didn't trust that new-fangled electric thing, so this an example of the belts-and-suspenders approach.

I was trying to be humorous and ask how the code guys here would reference this condition. I also have a picture of an 1840 house I did, I think taken pre-war (Civil War, that is). I was going to ask what code standards to apply.

I somehow don't think it was an original or even a retrofit for dual fuel. Too hard to seal the wires feeding into that pipe in the attic. I suspect the gas line was cut open for the wiring to be added. Or somebody screwed a light socket on there to mess with your head. :D

Actually, I 'frequently' see old gas-light lines converted to electric 'conduit' with elec fixtures replacing the gas burner. This one is unusual in that both are in place with what appears to be an adapter of sorts, splitting off for both.

Not I. I have wired a number of very large gas light chandeliers from gas to electric. Some of them took some creative thinking in order to get the wiring through those small gas pipes, but I always managed to do it.

The largest ones I've done were probably 12 feet to 14 feet across, they came from an old hotel in Gainesville and were being re-installed to provide accent lighting for an original gas-light era effect.

Which makes it so much worse when they get neglected. This place was the upstairs in a downtown business in Cumberland. Old time bakery on street level. but I don't think anyone had been up here in decades. So sad.

I live and Inspect in Arizona, we don't get to see cool things like that, Oldest home that I inspected in Arizona was built in 1917, one in Utah built in 1887. Most of our homes here are 30 years old, 3 bed 2 bath, one story on slab with a attached 2 car garage (Boring)! On the other hand, I probably would spend all day looking at all the modification and old technology and have to come back to write my report (well actually I did with the house built in 1917).

I had an apartment in The French Quarter in New Orleans during the early 1980's with fixtures just like this! And you could use either the gas or electric. I remember using the gas fixture for lighting during a storm when the power went out. Made me very paranoid. I kept thinking I would either burn the place down or fall asleep from Monoxide poisoning.
I did not think the fixture was all that rare because I would see them everywhere. Many homes and businesses had them as "porch lights" and if I remember correct....they always seemed to be burning.
