Very solid-feeling pipe that angles away from the house for a couple feet before I lost track of it. I probed in the area with a long screwdriver, with no luck.

Who thinks this looks like an old oil fill pipe?

House is about 58 years old and now has gas heat. Interior has been completely re-done. No evidence of oil tank or previous oil heat inside.

Very well could be the filler pipe or vent pipe.

Right, fill or vent. Why I focused on fill, I don't know.

Looks too big for a vent. Older vent would have been 1 1/4 inch
could be a fill.
Any abandoned lines at the basement?

Turns out there was indeed an underground tank still there. Deal went South.
