Flashing for balcony?

A balcony is a deck, with a roof on it.
I think, NO.

I say no, too. But on my own deck, which is ten feet off the ground, I used pressure treated lumber for the rim joists. Not required but seems like common sense after having to tear off my entire deck last year because of rot in the untreated fir rim joists.

The photo is actually a joist against the sidewall.

This new photo is the end of the joist against the headwall, if you will.
No ledger, and I don't believe the joists are canterlivered out; I guess they could be. I suspect the joists are just toenailed into the house somehow

You say that like its a bad thing?

It looks like that white strip below the planking is flashing, but is it something else? Obviously, they should have flashed the ledger board to the wall and joist to the side wall. Or flashed any blocking if they cantilevered the joists. It is nice trim work so the guys must have done the work before breaking out the brewskys.

Would it be reasonable to comment on the stained streaks you see? I'm thinking its from rust from the flashing? Or any other ideas?

If the only thing holding it against the wall is what's shown ( toe nailed and misinstalled joist hangers ) and a load is applied ( such as people at a gathering ) why do you think it would not collapse ? It needs a proper ledger board lag bolted to structural members to keep it from seprating from the wall and going down to the ground .
