We have a large builder who uses glue lam beams with TJIs over them. The builder cuts the laminated beams tight to the CMUs. Am I being unnecessarily picky to request a space between the CMU and the cut end of a girder?

I'd also want to see a gap or membrane separation.
If the surrounding space stays open like that moisture or rot probably won't be an issue.
If they close up the surrounding space, drywall insulation, etc. then any moisture from the CMU could easily be a problem over time. That CMU looks like an inner course though.
I've run into similar situations where the installation is likely to be a problem a long time from now, contractors and even buyers tend to figure they won't be around by then.
Our Code requires an air gap between wood and masonry set into masonry walls.
