RED LIGHT AND GREEN LIGHT ON GFCI BREAKER

HEY GUYS

first time i have seen this, inspected a house today and it had gfci breakers with green light on and working--tripped it light went off--then all kitchen gfci breakers had red light on and were working--tripped breaker and light went out--master bathroom controlling gfci breaker had no light when i tripped it yellow light..wtf

i alwasy told my clients a green light meant good a yellow and red light tripped--just like traffic lights. i have seenbreakers with both green and red lights --with red meaning tripped--what do you say

GFCI receptacle outlets have evolved quite a bit. Most offer multiple built-in circuit checks and more than one visual status indicator.

Here is one from Leviton (http://www.leviton.com/OA_HTML/ProductDetail.jsp?partnumber=S7599-W&section=42319&minisite=10251) with 2 LED indicators and an audible beep.

What brand were the ones you tested?

Depends on manufacturer. Seen them when the light was on when working and off when tripped. Seen them with light off when working and on when tripped. Never paid much attention to color or off/on light status.

If it is different from everyday in your home, it is tripped. Reset it.

thanks know about that one but never saw a red or yellow light before that meant operational--don't know the make--not on cover plate

Just a note. These are receptacles, NOT circuit breakers. GFI receptacles have NO overcurrent protection whatsoever.

A true GFI circuit breaker (that goes in a breaker panel) has both overcurrent and short circuit protection, plus GFCI protection. They are not the same thing.



About the receptacles above, as the others have said, it depends on the mfg. Some green when on. Some red or amber when tripped. Some no light at all.

know breaker from outlet--just wording. i cannot believe that the gfci outlet makers would make it so hard and confusing for home consumers to figure out working or not--red light stop--green light go--as i said have never seen a red light on gfci OUTLET mean good. NEVER i will persue this. just doesn't make sense to me--

But words mean things... Of course what you really mean is receptacle. All receptacles are outlets but not all outlets are receptacles. NEC has definitions for all these those words. They actually mean different things.
