exterior lighting on sensors

How far do you go to try and determine if exterior lighting on sensors works? Some of them have switches for testing positions. That route sometimes works for me and sometimes not.

What are your experiences and how do you handle testing or reporting on these types of fixtures?

I make zero effort. Many of those fixtures will turn on if you toggle the switch rapidly, but that still won't tell you if the photo cell or motion detector is working properly.

I give it a minute or two to see if I can verify that it's working. Otherwise I just put in a sentence about the motion sensor and move on.

Sometime I'll put black tape over the small photo cell on pole or other exterior lights. Then, I'll go do something else for a short while and come back to check.

None, I specifically disclaim testing motion and light activated lights. I do give them a once over visually but nothing more.
