I'm sure somebody has seen this before... Black backing with brown filler. Can you tell me what this is?

The OP has NOT pictured Balsa Wool, Balsam Wool (R), Balsa Batt, nor Kimsul(R) insulation.

Delaminating Corrugated fiberboard(cardboard) and paper, asphalt impregnated or not; does not equate to either wrapped balsa batt nor kimsul.

Yes, it does appear to be paper.

HG: I believe that the OP requested information on what the item is, and not just what it isn't. Can you provide the other half of the equation?:)

Delaminating Corrugated fiberboard(cardboard) and paper, asphalt impregnated .

So this "Paper was at least one inch thick before " De laminating "
* one thickness of corrugated is at least 1/8th inch thick.
