Do folks really use acronyms like this when you write your reports? If so, why?

Jeff Euriech
03-10-2013, 07:30 PM
Scott,

Brian was looking for acronyms that people put in their post. (he did not say report) A lot of the mentioned acronyms are common ones.

In my report, the first time I use an acronym in a paragraph, I will list the acronym and the complete words. Thereafter, I may use only the acronym. Example: PEX (Cross-linked Polyethlene), AWG (American Wire Gauge)

I also list all acronyms that may have been used throughout the report at the end of the report for further reference.

Jeff

Brian:

While it may be a hair-splitting point to make, most of those are not actually acronyms, but rather abbreviations. The difference being that acronyms are abbreviations that are pronounced as words. Some on the list that qualify would be AMP, ASHI, CREIA, HVAC (maybe), InterNACHI, J-Box, NAHI, and OSHA. I have not heard any of the others used as acronyms.

Thanks,

Aaron

It's pretty clear that Brian has made it so you can hover your mouse cursor over the acronym/abbreviation to find out the meaning. Pretty helpful, particularly to the newer inspectors who don't know terms like AHJ. Just hover over the letters and you will see the definition.
