Combustion Fan With Standing Pilot?

First time I have run across a furnace with a standing pilot but it has a combustion assist fan. It is a 1992 model Bryant gas furnace. I tried to get a picture of the pilot flame but could not. I though if it had a combustion fan then it would not have a standing pilot. Was there an interim period where they had the fan but still had a standing pilot?

Sorry I can't answer your question directly. Until you get the correct answer consider this; homeowner comes home from a Christmas eve party in 2010. At 11:00 PM his furnace goes out because the electronic flame ignitor is shot and it is COLD, not a 24-hour HVAC service van between his home and the north pole.

Being an under-qualified but stubborn DIY'er he decides to change the pilot from electronic to standing using parts from on old furnace in the garage. Pilot works, combustion fan still works, furnace ignites and everyone is cozy until Tuesday morning when he can get the right parts from HVAC supply co.

Only in your case he doesn't change the pilot back to electronic on Tuesday morning, he leaves it and sells the house.

It could happen, trust me.

There was not regulation that prohibited standing pilots in fan assisted furnaces. Most manufacturers did away with it to meet the minimum 78% efficiency requirement. A few of the early fan assisted furnaces had pilots.
