Panel wall covering in garage

do any of you make mention of panel wall covering in a garage. My thinking is that how do I know if its installed over a "properly rated" wall covering that adjacent to living space. Or am I over thinking?

Push on it between the studs with your fingers, if it is over drywall or something strong, it will not 'give' much, but if it is like the paneling in my garage ... if will be easily pushed in and flexed between the studs (yeah, I know, mine does not have any drywall wall separating the garage from the house - my house is 35 years old and it probably should have had separation at the time of construction but it did not. :sad: :(

I would lift a seam,and see if ther is drywall behind the panelling,if you are not sure,write it up as a defect.

Pushing on it is the easiest way to determine if anything is underneath.
You may also want to consider writing it up as suspect insufficient flame spread rating. Older paneling like that often gets written up around here under a Code section for flame spread rating by Muni inspectors. You can buy a clear paint for about $100 a gallon that is considered compliant.

In my neck of the woods = nothing combustible (walls, supports or ceiling) is allowed if it is an attached Garage (carport is OK)...
