This insulation is job is so bad, I don't even know where to put it or begin. It is a yellow expanding foam insulation. The insulator sprayed it on top of the attic blown in and over the joist and wiring and bath vents and everything else. I have never seen it used in the attic other than to spray on the sheeting and rafters. Plus it was inconsistent through the attic and I could not see any of the joist. Second thing is they sprayed it in the crawl and it is all over everything, and missing in places that it should not be. He sprayed it on some waste pipes and not others, almost like he was trying to hide something. He totally left it out of others. As far as the attic anyone see a problem with spraying it on the joist and existing insulation. I have no experience with this type. First time I have seen it. What about getting it all over ducts and conductors and pipes in the crawl. This stuff corrosive? Sorry I don't have pictures but I can't seem to get them to load.

Hi Ren,

Sounds like Icynene.

Icynene is vapor permeable so it will not create a vapor barrier; is fine over sprayed or blown-in blown glass fiber, rock wool or cellulose, and is a great convection heat-loss barrier. It is sprayed over joists and etc all the time, just don't bury something that should be accessible.

Depends.

There are two types of spray foam insulation: closed cell and open cell, I believe that Icynene makes both types available (albeit most of the Icynene is open cell even if they make the closed cell tpe), if not, other companies do make both types available, the closed cell foam is not vapor permeable (as I recall).

No pictures nor hint at the age of the structue, and no mention of the texture/feel (flexibility, brittle, hard, etc.) of the "yellow stuff".

Limited by the OP's 'word picture' and without a clue as to the vintage of the structure and no information as to the "feel", "look" or density of the application, I would suspect UREA-Formaldehyde Foam Insulation (UFFI - popular in the 70s, later banned in the early 80s for Resi.), OR more likely -- a DIY application (based on description of application areas/consistancy-lack of -- by OP) of Dow's "Great Stuff" or similar (Spray Polystyrene) or perhaps even a DIY Spray Polyurethane

AFAIK, Icynene (R) is water-based, and (still?) not available to DIY.

Many sprayed expanding foam insulations have a yellow appearance. Can NOT identify the type by the OP's post.
