Not sure if the valve was leftover on the installer's truck or if it was "by design".

Home built in 1987 ... new HVAC system in 2006.

"by design"

I did something similar at our house down in South Florida. It allowed me to close off the pipe going back into the air handler and blow out the condensate line from that point on. Then open the valve until the next time I was ready to blow it out (I blew it out about twice a year). I explained why it was there to the buyer of our home and he (he was an a/c service tech) said he's seen it done before too, makes it easy to blow out the drain line.

I reminded him, though, that if you *forget to open the valve when you are done, ... * the results will be a bit troublesome. :D

That *IS* the reason those are problematic... someone forgets to open the valve back up.

Good Idea that I've seen the (water damage) results after having gone bad.
