Do you think the middle horizontal bracing support for the rafters is overspanned, or is this setup okay. The rafters are 2 ft on center. 1995 home, not sagging in roof observed at this area.

There is no danger of a snow load on that roof in New Mexico, right?
I might mention it as being unconventional framing if I was paranoid.
I would say then that the rafters are spliced and could lead to trouble someday, but there is no evidence of sagging.

With a fairly steep pitch and without high snow loads that spacing might be ok if that is a 2x8. It is more likely that the nailed connections are inadequate if they only have a could of nails at the connections. I almost never see framing with purlins in my area.

Snow loads in Santa Rosa are fairly small. I normally see purlins perpendicular to the roof deck and rafters, but I don't see a problem with your photo.
