It would not be unusual here, but every place has different water chemistry.

Label is too small to read, but the water heater looks very old. In my area it is unusual, but not unheard of.

Well water, no chlorine, yep, it looks like an '83

If in doubt, I always confirm age of unit with vendor.

Raymond you know this - GSW or John Wood, YYMM for the longest time.

For whatever reason I was thinking it was YYWW (year/week)...

I had a 2010 heater last week that was labeled installed this year. I reported both the manufacturers date and the "plumber's" label. Old stock is possible, I suppose, but 3 years in the warehouse? Not gonna happen.
