Direct vent = combination exhaust/supply. They are sealed units, the room does not require additional air supply.

Direct vent IS NOT ventless.

Direct vent fireplaces have balanced venting. The annular space btw inner and outer sections provides combustion air and cooling while the exhaust exits the inner. Thus, all "direct vents" DO have combustion air incorporated. If it didn't the thing would ghost out in a few seconds as the firebox is sealed.

DV invented by Ron Shimek an patented in 1987. Ron sold Heat&Glo to Hearth & Home Technologies for about $240million then died a few years later. Great down to earth guy. One of his sons, John is still with the company while Chris moved on as did his Ron's brother Dan.
