'S' tile, 'Spanish S' tile, 'Mission S' tile are some of the names I've seen used for it.

Spanish tiles are what I've heard them called. There is another used around here called a barrell tile.

Any idea what has caused those damages. I hope its not from living near an airport.

Pics were a piece of cake, actually, shot from the far end of the flat roof:

Rick,

As shown in the pics there was a tree branch in contact with the roof at the bottom of the valley but nothing further up, and no sign of a higher branch cut off at the trunk. A lot of roofing cement slathered around up there, and sections of selvage roofing were used as patches in the tile, and I would not be surprised if the tile was damaged by the "roofers" in the course of other repairs.

That roof, BTW, was nothing compared to the masonry, this was typical of the parapet condition all the way around:

Barrel tile is a two piece tile, a pan tile and a cap tile. You lay two pan tiles, then a cap tile over the upturned joint where the two pan tiles meet. When installed properly, a barrel tile roof should be pretty much watertight in and of itself, even though the waterproof membrane under it deteriorates.

That was a problem with agents down in old Hollywood where there were a lot of 40-50-60-70 year old barrel tile roofs ... they did not want to hear that a roof needed to be replaced just because the actual and intended waterproof surface had deteriorated years earlier ... but us HIs (most of us anyway) finally broke those agents of that thought. :D

Anyone know the correct term for this tile?

Ludowici Roof Tile (http://www.ludowici.com/glossary.cfm#Bonnet%20Hip%20Plate)
I found this with no pics but I sure hope it helps. The only other terms I know are bulge hips or leaf hip starters depending on where the tile is located. Hope this helps...Good luck
