Think of all that brown gnarly stuff as the inside metal of the piping being washed off the wall thickness.

That's gnarly, man. :)

Is this house on a well per chance? Looks like dirt/mud, never seen galvanized piping city or well supplied come out that colour.

Yea looks like it, but no per the agent, I did ask but they said they were on city water. Who knows..

Was the house vacant?

I've seen water like that a couple of times in old houses which had been vacant for some time, water ran like that for a few minutes then began to clear up and just run rusty looking for a few more minutes before mostly clearing up.

Probably old galvanized water service piping from the water meter to the house and old galvanized piping throughout the house too.

Looks like a repair was made somewhere on the systems water lines and dirt/mud got into the pipes during repairs. The water heater needs to be drained and flushed also.

John, I think you nailed it. I would also advise chlorinating the system.

It is obvious that you are at the Willy Wonka factory and this is a main tap from the chocolate milk river.

Can't fool me.
