extended wire in box?

It appears the wires were short so they were lugged and lengthened as well as downsized in gauge. The smalled gauge wire is 10 gauge and appropriate for the breaker. But im not sure about the lug, is that okay?

Improper " lugged" and taped connectors in Service panel .
#wire nuts are an approved method.

Those look like a barrel splice under the tape. If the size range and materials are compatible there should be no issues. Wire nuts are not the only approved connectors.

I've never seen Square Barrel connectors.

It is not a Lug under that tape - This is what it looks to be under that tape
It is a mechanical connection as opposed to a crimped one

Other than a sloppy job? Hard to tell without seeing all surfaces are wrapped and a voltage rated tape was used I don't how much more could be said.

The tape they sell in the big box stores that won't even stick to itself has the same UL sticker on it that the 3M stuff does. With that in mind maybe the NEC's next move should be requiring zip ties to hold the tape on.

Or, UL could get real about testing tape as it's meant to be used. I've taped overhead connections 20+ years ago with the good stuff and it's still intact, while the cheap stuff sometimes won't even stay stuck to itself on the roll - try using it when it's under 40 deg. outside...

No, just a comment on the "testing" that must go on for the all important seal of approval.

If I had done the splice there would have been shrink sleeve involved though.

That was the question, but that question is not a "Yes" or "No" answer as it depends on the type of connection made as to whether it is allowed in the panel - no, just any connection is not allowed ... or ... yes, but not just any connection is allowed. :)

Yes I can tell that from the picture. If you look at closely you can see the screws, you can also see that it is square and the approx. the same length.

I also have experience using that type of terminal connection so experience also comes into play.

The connection style is fine but the insulation methods (taping) are questionable.
