If they make it that far; a fire on the second floor would cause that window to blow and the stairs to catch, wouldn't it?

That's what they'll need if they bail out the right window ... the fire escape only goes to the left window ... :(

It actually works as an exit from the third floor, it gets you to the same place as exiting through the second floor window.
