This is a well system. They have run the supply line into this creature. The 1" supply comes in on the left, then goes into the 4" u shaped apparatus and then back to a 3/4 line. Why would they do this. Some type of rigged expansion chamber?http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m378/ramdino/IMG_1913.jpg (http://s333.photobucket.com/user/ramdino/media/IMG_1913.jpg.html)

It is a trap. Maybe somebody's idea to catch sand in the well water.

Redneck at work.........probably a very good reason and a poor solution.

Looks like a home owner iron precipitator system.

Come on guys ... they needed another couple of pipe hangers and didn't have any, so they supported it from the ground. :D

Of course, though, with all that upside down with the paper facing exposed insulation there for a fire ... maybe the intent was to hold an extra supply of water to help put the fire out ... :)

That's all PVC and PVC should be there for supply anyway.

Not a defect, but something that I comment on when I see it.......any exterior water spigots on that house are using filtered water. In other words, watering the garden from a spigot mounted on the house will be using filtered water which dramatically shortens the life of the filter. On my own house, I replumbed the spigots to use unfiltered water.

Iron traps are not something done here, but if that is the purpose of that loop, then how would one clean that contraption?

The pre-filter should be more than adequate to remove any sand that is in the well water.
If there is sand its usually an indication the pump intake is to close to the bottom of the well.
