I was curious to know if there are any trade associations out there that require their members to have E&O insurance? I seem to remember that there was at least one that did but I can't seem to verify that dusty memory.

I'm not talking about recommending having E&O or offering to sell you E&O but actually requiring it for membership standing.

Any input?

An accountant I spoke to said they are required to carry E&O. And their rates were much higher than for home inspections. Apparently accountants get sued a lot.

They also make more money! :D

I do not know of any membership association that requires it, I'm sure they are some but none I know of.

It is a mandatory requirement for all certified general accountants in Ontario, Canada.

InterNACHI requires E&O indirectly in those jurisdictions that require it. See InterNACHI's Code of Ethics (http://www.nachi.org/code_of_ethics.htm) I.10.

Well so does ASHI, NAHI and AII and pretty much everyone else in between if it is required by a state law.

InterNACHI also provides negligent referral protection to any real estate agent or broker who recommends an InterNACHI inspector.
