Not too familiar with siding installed like this (attached picture). There appears to be wood falling out from behind the siding so if any of you have seen this or installed siding like this please advise, thanks.

Marc,

If that was at the first (lowest) siding board only, that would be a starter strip to make the angle of that first siding board match the angle of the siding boards above it, but that is from higher up ... so I am not sure why it is there.

One possibility may be this: is the house a masonry house? If so, that could have been a furring strip which was fastened to the wall to attach the siding to, but those furring strips are installed vertically.

We also used long shims years ago on cedar and other clapboard sidings to add to the dimension and airspace. The shims were sort of sideways shims that we called horse-feathers. Back in the stone age!

I'm actually not sure what type of structure this is. I'm just doing a favor for an elderly friend of ours. Problem i have is we don't normally see this type of material installation in our area (maybe in the mountains), so I'm not familiar with it at all.
Is it an issue that it falls out? Just trying to point them in the right direction for repair if needed.

Are you certain it's even from the siding? It looks like a piece of lattice and the siding looks to be pretty tight at the lap but it's hard to tell from the picture.

I'm 3000 miles away so no, I'm not sure. Our friend says its "falling out" of the siding so IDK...just doing her a favor..

Looking at the edge of the plank on the right side, it looks like cementious siding.

I was thinking it contains asbestos also.
