If the nails were not blind nailed (you cannot see the nail heads), but was face nailed (you can see the nail heads), the nail heads should be flush to (not flush with) the surface on hardboard as when the nail is driven 'flush with' the surface, the nail head breaks the surface and exposes the inner crap to the weather.

Same with Hardieplank, I think.

At least, that's the way I remember it.

yeah, they faced nailed....but do they need to be sealed?

If the nails are 'flush to', not to my knowledge.

If the nails are 'flush with', then it really does not matter anyway ... ;)

You didn't answer which they were ... 'flush to' or 'flush with'.

Hardbaord siding-- yes (sealed)
Hardieplank-- optional
