I was in a basement today and I found a hole in the ground. It appears to location for a sump pump, but no pump, no nearby electrical, no nearby place to discharge water, no noticeable slope to the hole, none of the tell tale signs of a sump. Any ideas what I might be looking at? Thanks for the help!

Frst pic, you might be looking at you feet. ;)
There might be a shutoff valve down there or a sewer line check valve.
Maybe the sump pump was planned, never got installed.
Maybe some old guy wanted a pit for his penny collection.

Cory,

More information required.

1. Is the house on municipal sewer system?
2. Is the house on a septic system?
3. If the house is on a septic system did you locate the septic tank?

Off hand it looks like a cesspool or access to a septic tank, but you did not describe the condition of the water, (i.e. smell, clear, putrid, dirty water, grey water...)

I'm curious. Did you ever find out what that was?

The image is not properly visible because it is too small so, I haven't founded anything.
