I guess HVAC techs are not structural engineers, but come on. Brand new 2200 sq ft house with approval sticker on the furnace.

Is it suspended in air or is it sitting in a pan that is sitting on the ceiling joist?

I suspect it's supported by more than just one ceiling joist.

No, it is supported by 2x4s laid flat spanning across from a Purlin to a board nailed to two ridge beam struts. The straps that are supporting the furnace are hanging from the 2x4s.

Maybe the tech was thinking the bouncy 2x's could act as vibration isolators!!!

Woof... That's not going to work!

Read the title of the thread........ "poorly supported...."

Jim,
I did read the printing on the photo.
I overlooked the typo on the photo, and took the post as I think it was intended, to call out that the supports were not adequate to properly support the HVAC unit.

Jack -What is the typo ?

Isn't determining that the supports are not adequate an engineering process?

And does not the AHJ make the determination on support when inspecting and approving an installation ?

It does not take an engineer to know that a 2x4 laid flat spanning about 10ft will sag considerably under it's own weight let alone with a furnace attached to it.

Jim, do you have to argue with almost every post? It is getting pretty old...

Would you care to share as to why your home inspector license was suspended?

Just discussing the issue.

As long as you're in the discussion mode, how about discussing that pesky inspection license suspension of yours? In other words, what did you get caught at doing wrong, this time?

"My thought is that builder will say it has been approved by AHJ . "

Like we all haven't heard that before. If you believe that..............

The typo I was referring to was the omission of the word "properly" (noted in the title of the thread).

2 X 4, 1 3/4" of wood could fail, split or shatter at a knot, and send the whole shebang crashing thru the ceiling. Who cares that it's working now?
Or should we pass that off to an engineer to evaluate? :D

And expired 5/31/2014...

Don't forget this one - it's only 10 years old (5/16/2004): Official's problems turn the spotlight on home inspectors - The Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/yourlife/home/articles/2004/05/16/officials_problems_turn_the_spotlight_on_home_insp ectors/?page=full)

And expired 5/31/2014...

All this time I was taking that as the expiration of the suspension ... not the expiration of the license ... but you probably are correct as that is how it looks now that I am looking at it that way.

Maybe that is the incorrect information Jim Abram is threatening to take action over - that I stated the suspension was over on 05-31-2014 ... interesting - Jim Abram, is this the incorrect information you are sending PM threats to me and to Scott about?

Mr Peck - Not a threat by any means.

Jim,

Glad you joined this discussion - is that the incorrect information you claim I posted?

If not, please tell me what is ... otherwise you have yet to state that anything is incorrect, only to imply that everything is incorrect, and that is easy to prove otherwise.

For the sake of the other members of this forum, and to abide by Brian's wishes, you can continue your rants without my participation.

Aw, shucks. And here I thought I might have been the only person who Abrams sent a PM to--he told me to remove the post about him that contained false information. Since I hadn't said anything about him that wasn't true, I suggested he bark up another tree.

Maybe he should just end the speculation, and come clean about why his license was suspended in the first place. Of all the licensing agencies I've dealt with over the years (7 state P.E. boards and the AWS), suspension is usually the last step in a progressive discipline process-brought into play when letters of reprimand and fines fail to correct faulty behavior.

Okay, there is you, Scott P., and myself so far.

Any others Jim Abram sent PM threats to? I would like to compile a full listing of any/all here (and elsewhere) who Jim Abram sent threats to about incorrect information.

Maybe Google will pick this up and others from other places and other forums who received threats from Jim Abram (or, to better get Goggle to pick it up - others from other places and other forums who Jim Abram set threats to).

Join in the Jim Abram sent a threat list.

Join the received a threat from Jim Abram list.

I wonder if Brian knows that Jim Abram is using Brian's PM area for sending threats to other members?

I don't know, but the MA website as of today just says "Suspension". All that needs to be done is to offer a little clarification as has been done to all of the other post Mr Abrams has disrupted.

As Scott said - All Jim Abram has to do is offer some clarification as needed and requested.
