First time I ever saw one of these suckers. From what I can gather, it has an empty gathering chamber that sits at the top of the firebox beneath the damper door and will heat up as a fire burns. Air ports on open ends of some of the pipe loop will allow air to flow more freely through the tubing and release extra heat into the room from the radiator-type fins. The doors are double pane glass and have open air chambers that appear to provide some type of heat or the doors are ported to keep the glass from breaking due to excessive heat buildup. Just guesses.

Hopefully Bob H has some insight.

Thanks Jim. Makes sense that the unit would have been filled with water. The copper likely would not have stood up well to the heat generated by a wood burning fireplace without water in the tubing.
