Mystery vent

Anyone know what the circular doo-hickey is? Never seen one before. I seem to have ruled out bath fan vent, dryer vent, kitchen vent.

Are you sure it is a vent?

Fresh air intake to the HVAC? Was the furnace nearby?

Fresh air to fireplace? I've never seen that vent style though.

The first floor powder room is on the other side of the wall, but this thing is not connected to the exhaust fan.
There is no fireplace.
The high efficiency gas furnace is at that end of the basement, but it has no pipe connected to the combustion air in take.
When you peak inside you do see a metal duct similar to dryer duct.

That style of vent is often used around here in finished basements as an HVAC supply duct. The center part screws in and out to vary airflow. In that use I would suspect a make-up air vent.

It is simply an adjustable vent cap that fits into a rigid pipe with spring clips.

Sometimes used for air vents, heating ducts, HRV ducts, passive air supplies, etc.
Does that narrow it down for yuh? :D

Oh yeah, it is designed for interior use. The threaded rod is just going get rusty ouside like that.

This is just a guess but could it possibly be make up air for clothes dryer. I say that based on the fact that the lowest louvered vent is painted and the other two are white which would indicate they were put in at same time. Is the clothes dryer in a closet? Or could just be make up air for exhaust fan etc. Was there an ERV or HRV:confused:

Interesting thought, but clothes dryer not in closet, wouldn't need make up air. The lowest one is the dryer, the upper one is the powder room exhaust.

I agree that it is an interior type vent or register. I've seen a few like it.
