Does anybody know what this deice is? I found it on the electrical mast on a house from 1979. the label was very much no longer readable.

I believe it is the clamp part of a clamp meter which measured the amount of current flowing through those conductors. Whether it ever produced meaningful results is another question.

Looks like a CT ring to measure a portion of the current instead of the whole amount. The results are multiplied by a scale of the CT.

If i see one of these again is there any kind of testing i should be doing?

They belong to the power company. Do you test their meters?

MY apologies, but I meant this to be a post in this thread, but I guess I hit the wrong button :

My electrician says it's part of an energy monitoring package...

I wouldn't bother with testing. The device is on the power companies side of the meter. I would photograph and note its presence.

Looks as though it might measure current imbalance, though I'm no expert on current metering.

Looks as though it might measure current imbalance, given that the two legs enter from opposite directions, though I'm no expert on current metering.
