How old is my Carrier?

I have a Carrier window unit and I'm trying to find out when it was manufactured.

It has a 'Date of MFG' stamp on it but i can't make it out.

I thought I could figure it out with the Serial # but none of the info I've read on how to determine the date makes any sense with this #...in fact i can't find any info on the model # or serial #

Please help.

Looks like it says "87" on it, so I say that it was probably manufactured in 1987.

That's old for an a/c unit.

Thank you '87 was my guess...but it could be a 97 or even a 67...i was really hoping for something a little more solid than a guess tho.

You can look at the label, I can only look at the photo - the photo looks like it says "87", which would mean either 1887 - which we know it is not that ... or 1987, which is a lot more likely than 1887 ... and it is not yet 2087 ... so I think it means 1987.

That is from the photo - now, with you looking at the label, if it says something other than "87", then that would be the year - because it says so on the label at "DATE OF MFG", which stands for 'Date of manufacture' and then it gives you that date.

It looks like ... "looks like" ... the label gives a month and year, with the month being not legible in the photo, and the year being "87" in the photo.

That is the best I can do unless you can get a better photo of the label which clearly shows what is scratched into the label at "DATE OF MFG".

That's like an old typewriter I have (remember those things?), stamped into the casting is "S/N" (which stands for "serial number", and next to it is "8-2", and, being as the typewriter is a "L. C. Smith Type 8", that "8" is the type, versus their Type 5, etc., and the "-2" is serial number 2 ... the second Type 8 typewriter off their production line.

Why? Because it says so on the label - just like it says on your label.

Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Day &Night: Recently (last 20 years or so) the first four numbers in theserial number represent the week and year. Previously, it was a complex seriesof letters and single digits. Call 905 672-0860 if you get stuck.

Coleman: Serial numbers priorto April 1992=1st two numbers are month, then year, then series.
After April 1992, 1st two numbers are year, then month, then series.

Comfortmaker (International Comfort)uses the first letter for the month (skipping I) and the first two digits arethe year.

Goodman: First two digits ofthe serial number are the year. Second two are the month.
Btu rating is model number..ie; GMP075-3 (75,000 bonnet input)
Compressor is same :serial # 9709088872 (yr1997 wk 09) Tonnage is model #CK361C The first two numbers after the CK (letters) divided by 12 is tons. ie:36 div by 12= 3 tons.

Lennox: Either the first twoor second two digits are the year, it varies by era, but most of them actuallyhave a separate sticker somewhere that has the year printed on it. Newer onesare first two equals manufacturing plant #, 2nd two are year and letter infifth slot is month (A thru M minus I). So 5898G 07568 would be Plant # 58,Year of MFR would be 98 and month would be July.

Rheem & Rudd: in themiddle of the serial number will be a letter "F" the following fournumbers are the week and year.
The first letter of the serial number gives the year of manufacture as follows:

The great majority of gas furnaces that I see are made by Carrier and sold under a variety ofbrand names - Carrier, Rheem, Bryant andothers. These are identified by the first four digits of the serial numberby week and year beginning around 1980. Before that, they used the first twodigits as the week of the year and a letter to represent the year, beginningwith R for 1964 skipping the letter z and ending in 1979 with the letter H.

Tranefurnaces have a long serial number with the week and year appearing late in thenumber immediately after the letter F.

Amanauses the code Blackhorse. S=1969, E=70, B=71, L=72. It goes in 10 yearcycles, so:

B=71, 81, 91, 01 H=76, 86, 96, 06
L=72, 82, 92, 02 O=77, 87, 97, 07
A=73, 83, 93, 03 R=78, 88, 98, 08

Lennox -Before '74 lst two digits equal the year, next digit the month. ex: 724XXXX =April 1972. After '74 first two digits equals the plant, 3rd and 4th the year,5th (A letter) equals the month. A=Jan but I is not used.

On old oil furnaces that look like they are from theWWII era I open up the air handler and look at the blower drum. A lot of themhave the date stamped right there on the drum housing in purple ink.1946, 1947, etc..

Thermo-Pridedoes not code their units by serial number but they do keep a record ofevery unit sold. You can contact them directly, give them the model and serialnumber and they can tell you when it was shipped from the factory.
