If you have been around InspectionNews for a while you know that cancer has affected me and my family in a big way and many of you have shared how it has affected you as well.
I will share my story below but first I would like to tell you why I am sharing it and why now.
About 8 years ago I decided to do something to help support those with cancer like my mom, to always remember those we have lost like my dad and to fight back against cancer by raising funds to help research cures and educate to prevent.
I joined the committee of our local Relay For Life (an event of the American Cancer Society) to help put on the event and over the 8 years have been the Committee Chairman twice.
I also created our own team (Footin' For Family & Friends) for the event. My mom, a 2 time cancer survivor was on our team and very proud that I, even though my dad died from cancer when I was 5, I still remembered him and honored him all the time.
Well, this past November my mom died. After beating cancer twice and us getting many extra years with her, it finally took her at age 81 on the same day that my Aunt Ann had died from cancer a few years earlier.
My mom had already registered for our Relay For Life which will take place on August 26th and had started raising funds. She was passionate about fundraising for this cause because she wanted to have a cure found so no one else would ever have to go through having cancer. In fact, she was always one of the leading fundraisers at the event.
So we have left her on our team and this is her "Why I Relay" statement.
Why I Participate in a Relay For Life Event
As you may know, I passed away on November 29th last year so this year I will be at Relay For Life in spirit only... but I will be there!
Even though I am no longer with you I was blessed to have been able to beat cancer twice which gave me many many great years to love my husband, children, grandchildren, family and friends. And love them I did!
For years I have been part of our San Clemente Relay For Life and I'm not done yet. Yes, I may be gone but I am still accepting donations for one more year to help Finish The Fight against cancer. I will be praying that in your lifetime a cure will be found.
Lovingly,
Kevin
Yes, my mother's name was Kevin.
Every year I ask that you DO NOT donate to me, rather, donate THROUGH me in support or remembrance of someone close to YOU.
My ask of you this year is that you make your donation on my mom's page, not mine, for her one last chance to do everything she can to make sure no one else has to hear the words "You have cancer" or that anyone else should ever lose a loved one or friend to this disease.
If you have donated then please reply here with a message of whom your donation is in support or remembrance of. Remember, your donation is just through my mom but in support or remembrance to the people closest to you.
For this I am eternally grateful.
