This tank pictured was found next to the water heater in the garage. Piping ran to it from the outside and then into the wall behind it. When I turned on the wall switch above it, it started filling. Is this part of a well system? House is on public water and sewer. Not sure where the water was going. A master bath was above this with a shower and whirlpool tub.
Thanks for any input.

Is there a well head outside?
Is there a breaker for a well in the panel?
Did you see a pressure switch any where?
It may be used as a lawn/garden water source.

When you turned it on the water pump started filling the pressure tank, probably.
Sometimes people add a pump if pressure from the city water line is low. The house would be at the end of a long run of pipe.

A few areas allow people to have a well for irrigation purposes in addition to their connection to city water. Could be that.

Inspected a house a couple week ago, built in the mid -90's, that was reportedly on city water. As it turns out, this particular house was the first in the development. There is an extra breaker at the service panel marked at 'well' (in the off position). Did not see a well pump or casement anywhere. Other nearby homes are probably 5 years newer or more. This part of the city has not always had city water. We strongly suspect that this house was originally on a well, then later converted to city water.
