Remember seeing something about wood foundations a while back. Had a high end home today which was built in 1993 and has a wood foundation. I thought that was a relatively new thing. Does anyone know anything about these? I can't help but think that this is just inviting rot and insect infestation. Are there any links out there that anyone knows of? I promised the buyer I would research. Thanks.

Jim - Have you done a search in the archives of the previous incarnation of InspectionNews? There are a few threads there, it appears, in the structure section.

Jim, I was looking into the possibility of a wood framed basement/foundation a few years ago. These type of foundations are known as PWF foundations (Permanent wood foundations) they use treated lumber and treated plywood and many are built on rubble trench footings. If done properly these type of foundations perform very well and some advantages over concrete. Take a look at some of these sites.
