I think a heater should have a special permit.. as a plumber, I know I could get into a good amount of trouble if I'm working before a permit is pulled for a job, but in the case of an emergency water heater replacement, should I wait a day or two to get the permit before I touch the heater?

It should definately be inspected though. Keep the Home Depot and Lowes employees off my jobs.

Joshua,

You are covered with that here:

From the 2006 IRC (and in almost any code).

- R105.2.1 Emergency repairs. Where equipment replacements and repairs must be performed in an emergency situation, the permit application shall be submitted within the next working business day to the building official.

Say Jerry, is there a site online to view and search through the code?

I don't know of any free ICC online codes.

The Florida Code is ICC based and is free online ( Florida Building Codes 2004 Home Page (http://www2.iccsafe.org/states/2004_florida_codes/) ), but it is not an exact duplicate of the ICC, there are many Florida changes in it.
