When your priorities for the day go from buying some paint for the patio cover to "Oh ****", the roof is worse than I thought.

Just by chance I thought I'd do a roof walk of my own home and this is what I found.

1) With all the rain we've had in SoCal there is not a stain in the ceiling. No sign of a leak in the house. That is amazing. Did this just happen and did I just get lucky?

2) What tore the hole in our roof and is living in our attic?

Well, I patched up two holes and and called a couple roofers for quotes. I've been tuning up this roof for years but now it's time to replace it. I think I'm one of the last wood shake roofs left in the area.

If not for dumb luck some would have no luck at all!

Maybe just dumb luck, or may be other factors too (must not forget the "too" as "dumb luck" is likely most important).

I once went up on a roof down in Hollywood (Florida) and found that an abandoned gas vent cap (the gas furnaces was removed and the vent left so as to not have to repair the roof) was rusted off and hanging to one side by one screw, leaving about a 6" hole through the roof. I could see no water stains on the insulation looking down through the hole, nor any water staining when I was in the attic.

Dumb luck is probably just a good type of luck to have.

Alien space ship crashed into your roof. Marvin the Martian is living in your attic.
