Yes, this shake roof is extremely old and yes, those are borders on top of it. It's a first for me.

Almost looks like a thatched roof at this point ... with slate accents.

Just where was that pic taken? It looks like snowy mountains in the background and I know there ain't no snow in San Diego!

Good eye Gunnar. That was taken a couple weeks ago. I was in a small village in Switzerland called Murren. This structure was across the street from where I was staying. I have to say, the construction techniques, quality of work and quality of materials would put most contractors in the states to shame since these folks build structures for centuries of use rather than just decades. Needless to say, the building in the picture looks like its been around since Christopher Columbus was in diapers.

Thats what you call an absorption roof. Instead of shedding water, it absorbs it. :D
