Saw two things today that I don't see very much.

Jack,

In that first pic, is that copper wire wrapped around the aluminum for some reason?

Sencond pic: I guess that is not 2000 flushes;)

Tim,

That is tin coated copper. The rag insulation is way too old for aluminum.

And, because it's tinned copper, you know the insulation is rubber, and you also know it is time ... no .. *past time* ... to re-wire that house.

Thanks for second photo. I just threw up in my mouth. Couldn't you "just" describe that one? Plumber's motto: "Your feces is my bread and butter."

Joe,

Plumber's motto: "Your feces is my bread and butter."

Around my town there is a company that cleans out port-o-pots. Their motto is "if you don't sh**, we don't eat."

yuck!!!

It does appear to be tin coated copper.... but, but... why the hell is that copper wire wrapped around the base of that conductor that way???

Rich:confused:

I've actually heard of this practice in regard to wiring. The term used to describe it is derived from the latin term "dumbus assus".

To keep the conductors from cracking off even more of that dried out and deteriorated rubber insulation.

Jack,

One of the many joys of being a hospital maintenance mechanic is that we get to unclog toilets that look just like that and worse. Almost on a nightly basis too.

One of the reasons I started an HI business.

Re that toilet:

When I was first starting out Will Decker was nice enough to give a couple of ride alongs.

One was a vacant house, fortunately all utilities were on.

I walked into the bathroom just after Will had flushed the with it. The toilet was one of the newer water-saving American standards, and since I'd been having problems with the toilets at my rental units I was curious to see how it flushed.

I pushed the lever. It flushed fine.

I realized I needed to use the toilet

Intelligent guy that I am, and realizing that I was a vacant house, I even checked to make sure there was toilet paper.

When I was finished, I pushed flush lever - no flush! --- the city had come along and turned off the water in the middle of inspection, and as we were doing interior at the time we hadn't noticed.

Lesson learned.

Keep a 5 gallon bucket in your truck and then borrow the neighbor's hose. :)
