Is there a standard place on a boiler to measure the incoming and outgoing water temperature?

I got that. The question is where is the standard place to measure it. I get some wide variations in temperatures depending on where I measure. I was wondering if anyone knew of a somewhat standard location that the measurement should be taken from.
