Apropos of nothing, I just had to share this. From today's Philadelphia Inquirer, this has to be one of the best first sentences in a newspaper article ever written.

"One of the gay-porn twins accused in a series of rooftop burglaries told investigators that his mother served as a lookout during at least one of the break-ins."

Mom was a lookout for burglar sons, police say | Philadelphia Inquirer | 03/19/2008 (http://www.philly.com/philly/news/local/16808841.html)

That is a good one John. My favorite front page leading story on the Pulitzer winning Philly "Daily News" about 10 years back was about the airline passenger who had her pet pig fly with her in first class.

Weeell, I guess thats the lesser of 2 evils involving Mother, at least she wasn't in the movies. Lets hope not anyway.

I couldn't bring myself to read the whole story, it didn't seem it could ever live up to the teaser.

Rick - I guess there's two kinds of people: those who would have to keep reading after a first sentence like that, and those like yourself who don't want to be disappointed.

If memory serves, the best first line in a novel is supposed to be from The Postman Always Rings Twice: "They threw me off the hay truck at noon".
